Carlisle Racecourse is a thoroughbred horse racing venue located in the village of Blackwell just outside Carlisle in Cumbria, England. The course has been on its present site since 1904, when it moved there from the area known as The Swifts close to the centre of Carlisle.

 

Carlisle Racecourse hosts a variety of races throughout the year, including flat races and National Hunt races. The most important race on the calendar is the Carlisle Bell, which is a Group 3 flat race for two-year-olds. Other notable races include the Cumberland Chase, the Cumberland Plate, and the Graduation Chase.


Carlisle Racecourse is a popular venue for both racegoers and trainers. The course is well-maintained and the facilities are excellent. The racecourse also has a number of bars and restaurants, making it a great place to enjoy a day of racing.

Characteristics

The course is pear-shaped course and just over a mile and a half in extent, with a stiff uphill finish of just over three furlongs. The straight is about six furlongs long, and the home turn is quite sharp. The course is considered to be a galloping track, with the stiff uphill finish and it is often used as a training ground for horses that are going to race at other courses.
