Horse Racing - Flat Courses - Windsor
Windsor hosts racing throughout the summer, the majority of which takes place during their regular Monday evening meetings. Run in May, the Listed Royal Windsor Stakes is the Berkshire track’s first big race of the year.
The Listed Leisure Stakes ran over six furlongs for horses age three and older, has been used in the past as a prep-race for horses targeting the big midsummer sprints at Ascot and Newmarket and has been won in recent years by Tropics (2015), Markab (2012), Bated Breath (2011) and JJ The Jet Plane (2009).
Later on in the summer Windsor stages the Midsummer Stakes, a Listed contest run over a mile and open to three-year-olds and older and, over August Bank Holiday weekend, the Group Three Winter Hill Stakes. The contest is run over twelve furlongs and features some useful horses on its past winners list, not least 2015 winner Al Kazeem.
A figure of eight shape, twelve and a half furlongs in extent. Races around a mile and a half see both left and right-handed turns, but in races below that distance, only right-handed turns are met. Though perfectly flat throughout, the track is sharp in character. However due to the length of the run-in (nearly five furlongs), galloping sorts aren't inconvenienced. When the going is very testing fields tend to track across to the far side, although it is a greater factor at sprint trips. Those drawn high are favoured otherwise at five and six furlongs.
